Fire on the Mountain

June 26, 1946

The conch was blown and a meeting was called. Ralph was trying to organize a group that could be incharge of hunting… Meanwhile, the older boys noticed a group of little ones urging a shrimp of a boy with a visible birthmark on his face to talk . He looked terrified and nervous, and after he gained the courage he said that he had seen a beastie (a "snake thing") and that he had seen it in the dark. Ralph denied the idea, and said that a bestie that big couldn't be here in such a small place, I think he was trying to calm this little boy. But then Jack said that maybe there wasn't a bestie, but if there was one, they would hunt it and kill it. I just sat there hearing the different points of views denying the idea of a beast, but having a fear, a worry that maybe just maybe it might be true; however, coming from a little kid I couldn't believe anything…. Soon enough, Ralph changed the subject to the fire. Everyone got exited from the idea, it was fun and useful so that we could be rescued.

Ralph, Jack, Piggy, Sam and Eric help collecting wood from the fire, and leaves to make smoke. Once they set the fire successfully with Piggy's glasses focusing the sunlight on the wood, they get a large fire going, but it quickly died down. Dinsension occurred between Piggy, Ralph, and the boys because Piggy said that they had to be more efficient, and so Jack said that his hunters would be resposinble for keeping the signal fire going. While everyone discussed, Piggy pointed out that one of the littlest boys --the one that had told about the beastie earlier-- was playing over by the fire, and now he was missing…. I was in total shame, I could've had saved him! I wish I could have pretended that nothing had happened like the others did, but that was just not me….
